When you become a photographer, you have to learn the basics of what photography is and how it's done.

Start off first with thinking what in specific you would want to photograph. When starting off, it is easier to focus at one object at a time so you can get used to your camera and how you want your photos to be.

Wade Duerkes is a photography manager at Northern Illinois University.

Duerkes was drawn into photography by taking pictures for his brother who was in the Marine Corps. His brother bought a camera and left it at home. He wanted Duerkes to take the photos since he couldn't go to any family events.

As Duerkes took more and more pictures, the more he got into photography.

Later on in life, Duerkes started to help others learn photography technique by teaching.

Duerkes Advice

"Always photograph what you enjoy. There will always be some projects and clients, but always do what you enjoy the most, otherwise you will get burned out."

Duerkes personal favorite to photograph is nature.

"You're not only enjoying the scenery, but it's reflective," Duerkes said. Taking pictures of nature gives him a personal, almost spiritual, experience.

Big Tip

When you are photographing people, talk to them. This gives your subject a more comfortable feeling so they don't have shrugged shoulders and awkward smile.

"It's easy to get caught up in what you're doing, but remember to have that personal connection," Duerkes said. "It's not just about capturing the moment, it's you reflection on the world."

Do not be afraid to ask your friends and family for help. Whether it is posing, or helping with a project, the more your photograph the better. Practice makes perfect.

Equipment

As a beginner, you might not have the access to all the newest technology for cameras. However, that should not stop you from taking the photos that you want to capture.

Duerkes said to remember to photograph with the means of equipment. Use the resources that you have.

Using Duerkes' advice can help shape you as a photographer. Each is a key element into knowing the basic knowledge for photography.
